Cooperation in the food sector in Armenia

Armenia is a priority partner country in the National Board of Trade Sweden’s development cooperation and is of strategic importance within the EU’s Eastern Partnership.

The coutry is undergoing a transition in which there is a clear need to diversify its trading partners and reduce its dependence on traditional export markets.

Focus on the food sector

Through Open Trade Gate Sweden (OTGS), the current cooperation with Armenia focuses on the food sector.

Armenia has strong potential in areas such as:

  • dried fruit and berries
  • herbal infusions and plant-based products
  • confectionery and processed foods

Although many companies offer products that are of interest to the Swedish market, they also face challenges related to export readiness, market knowledge and compliance with EU regulations. Targeted support can help reduce these barriers and create better conditions for long-term trade relations.

How we work

In 2025, a pilot study was conducted to analyse Armenia’s food-sector ecosystem and identify relevant sectors and companies for longer-term cooperation.

The work was carried out in cooperation with the International Trade Centre (ITC) and in dialogue with the Embassy of Sweden in Armenia. Activities included workshops, individual coaching and a market orientation visit to Stockholm for Armenian companies.

The pilot study forms the basis for a planned three-year project (2026–2028), which aims to support Armenia in diversifying its exports beyond traditional markets by:

  • strengthening companies’ export readiness
  • increasing their knowledge of Swedish and European requirements
  • supporting networking with stakeholders in the Swedish food sector.

A long-term perspective

The cooperation is part of Sweden’s broader trade and foreign policy engagement in the region. By strengthening its trade relations with Sweden and the EU, Armenia can increase its economic resilience, create new business opportunities, boost exports and move towards a more sustainable and diversified economy.
