Sweden relies on imports of a large number of goods from countries outside the EU. In a new report, the National Board of Trade Sweden presents a method for identifying which of these dependencies are strategic and particularly vulnerable.

The report shows that Sweden’s most vulnerable dependencies are largely concentrated in China and the United States and often involve intermediate goods that are critical to industrial production and global value chains.

Strengthening economic resilience requires a better understanding of which import dependencies could have significant consequences in the event of disruptions. Our method provides a systematic basis for identifying and monitoring such strategic dependencies over time and may contribute to the ongoing discussions within the EU on how to assess and address strategic dependencies.
