21st century trade research has uncovered clear connections between openness to trade and productivity improvements. These insights are crucial for EU priorities related to competitiveness and inclusive economic prosperity.

Trade reforms designed to stimulate productivity are particularly important for the EU, which has seen a decline in productivity growth during the past 20 years.

In a new policy brief, the National Board of Trade Sweden identifies six conclusions that follow from this new generation of trade research. One example is that tariffs on intermediate goods are a burden on industrial competitiveness. Consequently there is no point in saving them as “chips” for future trade negotiations.
